Welcome to my website! I started sewing in college to escape the stress of engineering school, and it quickly became an easy to way to save money by buying and mending cheap thrift clothes rather than new ones as well as a creative outlet in days of derivatives and understanding complex concepts.
Sewing, along with other fiber arts crafts like crocheting and knitting, have brought great joy to my life. Being self-taught, though, challenged my confidence and my patience. Part of this struggle was the lack of basic beginner information online – so many beginner tutorials I read used terms I didn’t know or skipped over tiny details that ended up making a big difference!
In school and work, I have seen the cost of not explaining things clearly… I had many peers quit engineering or feel intense shame and embarrassment when people skipped over these fundamentals. People should never be made to feel ashamed of not understanding something yet. Everyone gets there at a different pace, and sometimes people have different background information and understanding of a topic where they need in explained another way or with further details.
Furthermore, I am a big believer in self-improvement and self-determination. What is one small thing you can do to make your life better? What do you want your life to look like? I believe that making these choices and operating in your sphere of influence can help you to find contentment, and, as the title of my blog says, mend your stuff and your life.
I live in a busy metropolis of the country where it is easy to be too busy. One of my personal goals is to find contentment and slow down to live at my own pace. That is why I called my blog mellow mending – my goal is to create a low stress but high reward culture around sewing and mending.
If my blog can prevent one ounce of frustration and prevent one person from burnout of sewing and the creative arts, that’s my goal! Come along with me and let me know what questions you have!
